Writing more

It's only been a week and a half since my last post which is an improvement.

Now on to what this post's title is about. I've been writing more. To be more specific I've been writing more fiction. To be even more specific I've been working on scripts for an animated series a coworker and I have been working on. It's quite an ambitious project considering we've got rough story plots for three seasons of about 15 episodes each, three movies and a spat of holiday specials. So far I've got one complete script written and I'm working actively writing another. We don't yet know how we're going to animate it but we'll cross that bridge when I have more scripts written. I have said that I want at least the pilot done by the end of this year.

All this started about five months ago when my coworker, after one of our many discussions about movies we'd like to make, said we should work on a something together. He came up with a lot of the original ideas for the series but I've been adding my own and at this point there are some ideas that we can't remember who came up with them. At first I was skeptical about the series but after a few discussions I was hooked and after a month of talking I bought a notepad and started making notes. I'm doing most of the writing but it doesn't feel like I'm working alone. We talk so much about the series and throw ideas back in forth so much that this is a collaborative effort.

I'm also just started working on the script for a comic that will feature a year in the life of a superhero by showing all 365 days. Working title right now is 365 Hero. Obviously it won't go into great detail about each day, in fact I plan to have each day represented on a single page with a two page spread about once a week for important or visually spectacular days. I estimate it will run between 450 and 500 hundred pages. I'm not a great artist so I don't know when this will see the light of day. Ideally it would be published weekly covering one week time wise as well. After the year ended it could be collected in an omnibus edition. This is still very much in the planing stages.

Wow, I don't dream small do I? :)

Well thats all for now.

big post

Ah been a few days so I have several things to talk about.

First up is my new MP3 player. I bought a Sansa Fuse with 4 GB which is plenty for me. Besides audio it also does video which is becoming a feature on any player big enough for a screen. The video converter works on avi files which means I could put some tv episodes or movies on it. I don't think I will because for one, it takes a long time for the converter to convert big files and two, I got a small headache watching while watching a twenty minute tv show episode I converted.

A few hard drive moves ago I lost all my music, about 4 gigs of songs. So I have nothing to put on it except for podcasts which is working out very well. I have three or four podcasts that my feed reader auto downloads for me. I've been letting them pile up because the only way for my to listen to them before now has been through my computer but when I'm at my computer I would rather watch a tv show or catch up on my feeds or just poke around wikipedia. I'm a little sad to say but I can't read a blog and listen to a podcast at the same time without losing some content. And there are some podcasts I really want to devote my entire attention to but when I'm at the computer well I wander. But with my Fuse I can step away from my computer and still listen to my podcasts.

And here's a picture of a Sansa Fuse(BTW mine is red too):

Now on to the package I recently received from Canada.

The package was from Leanne Franson writer/artist of Liliane, Bi-Dyke

Liliane, Bi-Dyke is a comic I found about two weeks ago. Quick disclamer: this comic is LGBT friendly(just to let you know in case the title didn't tip you off). I read through the archive in two nights. In 2006 the author's Saint Benard, Muesili, died which caused me to start bawling my eyes out when I reached those stories inspired by her pain. Why did it hit me so hard? Well, Liliane is based largely on the the author's life which included owning a Saint Bernard named Muesili who had been featured in a few stories. About a year later when she decided to get another dog she put together some very nice comic books from those stories featuring Musili and sold them on her site.

I was cautious in buying them because I wasn't sure she still had any left or that the prices listed were still valid. So I shot her a quick email asking for info and received a reply within minutes telling me she still had some and to go ahead and take advantage of any speacils still up. I ordered two sets of comics and two books of stories that had not been published online.

One set of all three Muesili comics for myself, which I got signed.

The two not online story books.

And one set of the two family friendly comics that I plan to give as a gift to someone(not sure who yet) at some point(not sure when yet).

Moving on to Roleplaying coincidences. Lets see, ok, first my friend Krystal has asked me if I wanted to form a small gaming group or possibly join a group. Soon afterward I began listening to the Penny Arcade/PvP DnD Podcasts on my MP3 player. And while listening to said podcasts, I see Will Wheaton has posted a hand full of links to free roleplaying guides and adventures. Maybe I'm overthinking things but it feels like I am being lead/guided to roleplaying. Not much else to say about that.

Guitar hero woes: I am without a guitar contorller. I lent mine to a family member and it has disappeared they have had said. I don't blame the familiy member. I know the risk in lending out stuff is to never see it again. I have been browsing for a new guitar in stores. I hoped to buy one in a bundle with a new game but could only find them with wireless controllers which I was told would only work with that game and other games in the same series but wired ones would work on both. Now after a quick search I see that Guitar Hero guitars(wired and wireless) also work with Rock Band but not the other way around. If I had known this sooner I would have bought one sooner.

Mother's Day is almost here. Normally a day to spend with family eating BBQ, this Mother's Day I will be at work. It's an unfortante side effect of working at a place that provides a sevice linked to the holidays. Not every holiday but those that involve buying tokens of affection cause a spike in our sales. Judging by the number of cookie cakes we've prerolled we will only be about half as busy as Valintine's day. I'm going to miss seeing my mom for most of the day. I might get to see her for a little while in the evening but I'm not sure.

Oy, I had one more topic but it's nearly 6am and I'm exasted, so it'll get it's own post tomorrow.

See ya.

Comics reading day

Today was my day off. I spent it reading comics and looking up characters on Wikipedia. I'm slowly getting caught up on what's been happening in the X-Men comics over the past few years. I've been avoiding all but a handful of books but yesterday I got into a discussion about comics with a coworker.

I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. I've read through Young X-Men and X-23's two origin comics. Oh, I just looked at the newest Uncanny X-Men issue and Northstar is back from the dead and not a psychotic killer anymore, so yeah! For those that don't know Northstar is one of the more famous gay superheros who was killed, brought back as a brainwashed killer and then killed again. He might have been brought back and killed one more time but I'm not sure.

I'm tempted to read through Civil War and Secret Invasion. I dropped out of comics just before Civil War really got started due to having no money to spend on comics and having not yet discovered torrented comics. I will not be looking at any post Brand New Day Spider-Man comics. If you don't know what Brand New Day is I envy you and will not spoil your innocence. It's just horrible and utter rubbish and just horrible. Trust me don't Google it, don't ask your friends, just forget I ever mentioned it.

Writing problem/Look at this new cool comic I found!

I think I may have a problem. At some point in the last couple of days I started asking myself what I was saying with "Am I Memorex?" See I had this feeling that besides being a story that people might want to read just because, that there was something I wanted 'say' with the story. Not like I wanted to preach some kind of lesson but rather to show some part of me. And I figured out what part of me was trying to come out through the story. This has a downside cause now that I know what I want the story to be I can see bits that I want to change in the parts that I've already posted. I don't want to restart the story but I also don't want to make anyone who has been reading to have to go back and reread everything. Any ideas?

I just found this comic Khaos Komix because someone had an image from the comic as their LG icon and someone else said "Love the icon I can't wait for the next part," which totally made me go "I must find this comic," cause the one who said that is the author of Tales of Mu, which is an online serial story that I love(that link is to the first episode of the story btw). So I set out to find the comic, which was very easy cause the user with the icon had a link on their userpic page that I followed right to the comic.

I'm now a little more than half way through the archive and I can not believe that I did not know about this comic. I mean like a couple of years ago I set out to find as many LGBT comics online as I could and I found a bunch but somehow this comic never even blipped on my radar. I may need to set out on another hunt but that will have to wait for a little while.

There are a few other things I wanted to gush about but I really want to get back to Khaos Komix so I'm just going to list links:

Girl Genius - Adventure, Romance, Mad Science!

FutureMe.org - Send an email to the future.

EZTV - My source for torrents of current tv shows.

W Juliet - An awesome manga that I started reading but fell out of for some reason but now have restarted.

See ya.

Out of Sorts/Rambling Post now with poetry

I'm feeling kind of out of sorts. I don't quite know how to describe it. I don't feel depressed, I think, but I not exactly happy or mellow. I feel empty. Hollow. I am feeling a little disconnected from things. This feeling started today I think. I can remember laughing at a comic earlier. I canremember laughing and what was funny but now I can't laugh. I feel tired. I may just need sleep.

---

Head full of cotton
Empty heart
Smile for them

Strained voice
Red eyes
Laugh for them

Tired body
hollow mind
Be happy for them

---

Yeah, I get to feeling like this and I write bad angst ridden poetry.

I was going to go the movies today but I woke up late and then I got caught up in rereading through the archives of A Softer World. I read all 418 strips. Hmm you know, A Softer World isn't exactly a light fluffy happy comic. A lot of the strips are actually kind of depressing. Maybe I should avoid four hour binges of semi-depressing comics.

Tomorrow I'll be going to the mall early to pick up a book I ordered after like five unrelated people recommened it. The book is Palimpsest by Cat Valente. I've heard very good things about this book and will report back on how it stacks up to the hype.

Oh yeah, part 6 of "Am I Memorex?" went up last night and the first weekly compilation will be up later. You know what, hold on a sec.. there, it's up now here. Part seven will post Sat morning.

Thats all I got right now.

I Made This

So a few weeks ago I grabbed a stack of old Wizard magazines and started tearing out pages. Yesterday I cut a box apart and covered the pieces with postal wrapping paper. Then I took those torn out pages and cut out the pictures I wanted. Then the fun started as I began sorting the pictures and arranging them to cover one of the covered cardboard. Yes, I made a collage! I use to love making collages in school and took pride in leaving no uncovered poster board.

The pictures are taped down with scotch tape because I hate the way glue makes the paper wrinkle. I'm planning on making two or three more to hang on my wall.

The pictures are a little dark because my camera's flash has stopped flashing.

My Backpack pictures

A while back I got my Girls With Slingshots buttons and pinned them to my backpack. I also promised pictures of buttons and backpack. Well here they are:

This is my backpack which I take everywhere. It's conveniant for carrying a lot of small things that don't fit in my pockets like a hair brush, headache relievers, my writing joural and a book. Also if I buy something I don't have to walk around with a bag in my hand.
On the back pocket you can see from left to right a group shot with Jamie, Hazel and McPedro, a Hazel button and a Jamie button. Hazel and Jamie are two of the heroines of Girls With Slingshots.

Here is McPedro the Irish talking cactus.

This is Tyler, a kid Hazel babysits in the comic. As for why he's saying, "Booooooooobies!" you can read his origin comic to find out but he does reappear in later strips.

This is my trusty Vault-Tec lunch box. It protects my copy of American Gods by Neil Gaiman from getting trashed.

And here is my copy of American Gods within the steel hardened tin walls of the Vault-Tec lunch box.

Thats my backpack.

And here's a special bonus picture of myself that I took today.
Umm, yes I took this in the bathroom but only because the flash on my camera stopped flashing and I didn't want to go outside.

All these photos plus two others I took of myself today can be found on my Photostream on Flickr

Watchmen Review

First off I want to point out that the image at the head of this review is from the Watchmen soundtrack which is most excellent. The music in this movie is down right perfect. Songs like The Times They Are A-Changin' by Bob Dylan and All Along The Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix and The Sound Of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel pull you back in time and ground you in the world of Watchmen.

Overall I think the movie succeeds in translating the book to the big screen. After watching the film I find myself wondering why so many people thought Watchmen was unfilmable. Watchmen is a good film but like any film it isn't for everyone. If you like superhero movies with plenty of action laid over a solid story with good characters then this movie is for you. Fans of the book, I would say to you, think about how much you like the book. The more you love the book the more likely you are to dislike any and every change made. If you can set aside you preconceptions of what this movie 'should' look like then you have a better than even chance of liking this movie.

Turn back now ye who have not read Watchmen, there be spoilers ahead.

There aren't too many but you have been warned, now on with the review.

I went into this movie with high expectations due to all the hype I had seen online and off. From the opening logos to the ending credits this movie does not disappoint.

I felt the movie stayed true to the graphic novel, keeping everything important while trimming out the not so important stuff. I haven't read the book in awhile but there are a few places where the dialog felt different. When it comes out on DVD I'll probably sit down with my copy and see exactly what got changed or dropped.

The film seemed very violent at times but I don't think they added anything that wasn't in the book. Fights are bloody and brutal. When Dr M blows people up, they literally blow up in a spray of blood and organs. The rape scene is shown and violent and the rapist is definitely not shown as sympathetic in anyway.

There are three scenes featuring sex in the movie, only one featuring full on screen nudity, which is in keeping with the book. I thought the scenes were well shot and didn't shy away from what was in the book.

On the subject of nudity, I liked that they let Dr. Manhattan walk around nude. I was sure that they would have him wearing shorts the whole movie. In his first scene of the movie he's naked but they keep from showing his crotch by having him facing away from the camera and cutting to another shot just before he turns all the way around. When I saw that I thought, "I guess they're going to play hide the penis," then they showed it later and I was like, "Oh cool they had the balls(no pun) to show it." I personally am not bothered by nudity but think it's a good thing when characters can be nude outside of a sex scene and have to hide their genitals.

One thing that bothered me was Silk Spectre II's costume. I don't care that they changed it from a see through kimono and swimsuit to skin tight latex. What bothers me is that her costume provides her with the least protection than any other superhero. Unless it's like bulletproof latex then even Rorschach with his two coats is better protected. Ozymandias got sculpted body armor when his costume in the book was just cloth. Nite Owl's costume was upgraded to body armor. So why not the Silk Spectre?

One other thing that bothered me was the lack of people of color and women in speaking roles. All the main heroes are white as are most other speaking roles. The only person of color I can remember with a speaking role was the psychiatrist that interviews Rorschach in prison. As for women, we have only the Silk Spectre among the heroes and her mother with speaking roles. There was another woman hero, Silhouette, but she didn't have any lines. I'm hard pressed to think of another woman who had a speaking role. Of course all this is exactly the way it is in the book so there isn't much to be done about that without making affirmative action like changes. I did notice that the background characters were nicely diversified which is at least something.

While I'm thinking about it, Silhouette is one character that I wish had gotten more time in the book and maybe a different ending. I'm not saying they should have changed it for the movie, I'm saying I wished the book, that the movie is based on, had been different. I really liked her costume because it wasn't skimpwear like most female heroes are forced to wear in comics. It is stylish and sexy without being revealing and featured pants, a rarity among female costumes. In the book, she was forced out of the Minutemen, the group of heroes from the forties, when her status as a lesbian became public knowledge and was later killed for the same reason. In the movie she is mentioned once by a main character but her story is told in the opening credits through a pair of scenes, the second of which showing her dead with her lover is gut wrenching.

The ending... well do you remember that episode of the Outer Limits where they change this guy into this pseudo alien and then drop him in a populated area so that the world can unite against a common enemy thus ending all war? Well the ending is kind of like that. In fact towards the end they show the opening of the Outer Limits on a tv which I think is a nod to the show. Not terrible, not great but it works well enough.

First thoughts on Wonder Woman movie

I just finished watching the new animated movie based on the comic book character Wonder Woman appropriately titled Wonder Woman.

First impressions: It's not a bad movie but it's an origin story for a character that doesn't really need an origin story. I'm not saying that everyone knows who Wonder Woman is but the majority of the people who will be interested in this movie do. Truthfully her origin could have been handled with a few lines.

I get the feeling that the makers of this movie wanted to show Diana as a "strong" woman but didn't quite know how to do that. Instead they threw her into a couple of situations that would 'normally' place a woman at a disadvantage and let her overcome them. I would love to quote specifics but that would involve watching the movie again, while stopping it to make notes, which would extend the viewing time to around two hours, which would mean I would finish this post around 5am, which is much to late if I intend to see Watchmen tomorr..er..later today like I want to.

Will tell you about my favorite part of the movie which was right before the credits and unfortuantly only lasted a minute. (BTW I don't consider it a spoiler to reveal that not only does she not die in her own movie but she ends up living outside of the Amazon's paradise island)

Diana is shown with dressed in normal clothes (and wearing glasses) coming out of a building with Steve. (That would be Steve Trevor Wonder Woman's love interest form the comics) He opens a taxi door for her and she says she can lift cars and can lifting a car door handle. He says that they have talked about this in a friendly "indulge me" voice. She says, "I know, sorry," before smiling and continuing in an overly sweet voice, "Oh thank you Stevie. You're such a gentleman," and she flips her hair.

A police car swerves around the corner joins others surrounding a building. A police officer smashes through a window followed by Cheetah. (The Cheetah is one of Wonder Woman's classic enemies who in her modern incarnation is a human/cheetah hybrid) She begins attacking police and even snaps one's neck. Diana hands Steve her glasses and takes off running while saying she'll see him at his apartment. He shouts after her to call if she's going to be late, he doesn't want supper to get cold.

She runs into an ally while pulling her blouse open with both hands, revealing her costume underneath. (What's next a small child pointing and shouting look it's Wonder Woman?) She exits the ally now fully outfitted in her costume and runs past the young girl she met at the beginning of the movie who points and shouts, "Look it's Wonder Woman." (I had to ask) Wonder Woman leaps from car roof to car roof before sending her lasso sailing to catch Cheetah's leg. Wonder Woman yanks her up into the air and toward herself, setting Cheetah up for a punch to the kisser, which we don't see as the scene fades to black and the credits start.

Now, this is the start of the movie I'd like to see. Diana living off the island being a superhero while in a relationship with a normal man. Done right this would be a kick ass movie. Alas it's only a minute long.

That's all for this one.

Middleman News

I have some bad news and some good news for fans of The Middleman. For those who don't know The Middleman was a very cool show full of movie, comics and tv references. The show followed the adventures of Middleman in training Wendy Watson and her boss the current Middleman. Think of the Middleman as a one man MIB who's job is to investigate and cover up all manner of strange, paranormal and down right odd goings on.

First the bad news: The Middleman has been canceled and will not be back for a second season on ABC Family.

The Good news: The DVD set comes out this July and will be packed with extras and behind the scenes stuff. Also coming out in July is a graphic novel based on the unfilmed thirteenth episode of the first season. The graphic novel, titled "The Doomsday Armageddon Apocalypse" will serve as a season finale but will tie up enough plotlines to serve double duty as a series finale.

While I'm sad that The Middleman isn't coming back it's hard to be too down beat when Javier Grillo-Marxuach, creator of the series, is so positive about the whole affair. You can read his The Middleman Rumor Control FAQ on his blog The MiddleBlog. He has high hopes that The Middleman will continue beyond the graphic novel. I am powerless before his optimistic attitude and can not help but believe he is right and that The Middleman will return.

One last treat. A sneak peek at the character designs for the graphic novel by Armando M. Zanker via The Middleblog(click for bigger images):

Girls with Slingshots / Work News and Thoughts

Today I arrived home to find a padded envolope waiting for me. I wondered who I knew in West Virgina as I read the return address. Throwing caution to the wind I tore open the end and discovered these inside:

I think I squeed with glee. My buttons from Girls With Slingshots had arrived. I wasted no time in attaching them to my backpack. When I get batteries for my camera, I'll be sure to post a pic. Until then just take my word that they look cool and not at all dorky.

Ah yes you might be wondering what is Girls With Slingshots. Well GWS(as much as I love the title it's a bit long to type it out everytime) is a web comic created by Danielle Corsetto. All you really need to know about GWS is that it's funny smart and at times sexy. I read through the entire archive in one sitting one night. This comic has comedy, romance, adventure and an Irish talking cactus. Let me say that again: It has an Talking Irish Cactus. What are you wanting for:

Trust me you won't regret it.

***

And now on to the other topic I wanted to cover my job.

So tonight my manager and I were talking and I'm not sure how we got on the subject but he told me if the lead assistant manager left he would recommend me for that position. I was a bit shocked and really didn't know what to say so I just kind of pretended he hadn't had said it.

Lately he's been giving me tips on how to manage, on delegating tasks and how best to order employees around without really ordering them around. He wants me to stand back more and let my crew do more of the work while I supervise. I find this very hard to do. I'm not used to doing nothing while everyone else works. I find myself becoming very uneasy if I don't do something.

I've never wanted to be in charge of other people. I never wanted the reponsibility. But the last two months has seen me leap from being a new hire to being fourth in the chain of command. I did not seek to be promoted but when the chance appeared I jumped at it. It makes me a little light headed to think I've come farther in a few months than I did in four years at my previous job.

Best Laid Plans.. Part 2

So now that my brain doesn't feel two sizes too big for my skull I wil regale you with the conlusion of yesterday which did not go exactly as planned but was still enjoyable.

After paying my bill at Tokyo Grill, I walked the two blocks to Hastings. I stopped momentaly in the airlock you enter through to browse the wall of TPB comics. A few items caught my eye but not enough to make me really want to spend money on them. Entering the store proper, I walked straight ahead into the music/game/comic/manga/anime/novoltiy section. (You know until just this moment I didn't realize that all that was thrown together while books and movies each have their own seperate sections.) I wasn't looking for anything in paticular or even looking to buy anything at all. I was mainly just there to browse around and kill some time. Walking past the rental games toward the comics I saw this:

What caught me eye, besides the beautiful cover, was the size of the book. It measures an impressive twelve inches by twelve inches, has 480 pages color pages and feels heavy enough to use as a weapon. It's a collection of short comics inspired by the songs of Tori Amos. The introduction by Neil Gaiman is a lovely story about how he was introduced to her and her music. Before each story is a page with the song title and lyrics that inspired it. With over 80 creators working on over 50 stories there is a lot of variety between the covers. There are love stories, mini adventures, slice of life stories, horror stories and some that speak to hidden parts of ourselves. The cover grabbed my attention, Neil reeled me in and the stories themselves have grabbed hold.

I decided to buy it almost imidiatly and spent the rest of my time lugging it around while browsing the toy/novoltiy asiles. I found a nice keychain in the shape of the BPRD symbol. I also saw this lunch box:

I almost bought it as well but when I opened it the lid fell off. On closer examination I saw the lid was not broken but poorly made. Looking at my Vault-Tec lunch box, that I got with Fallout 3, I can see the lid on my box is attached much more securely with small strips of metal that also function as hinges. The Serenity lunch box lid was attached to the rest of the box by a bent section of it's bottom lip that caught on another bent section on the box.

I seem to have developed a slight fondness for these metal lunch boxes but not as collector pieces. I like to carry a book with me but I don't like the book to get damaged by being shoved in my backpack. Enter the Vault-Tec lunch box which now protects my copy of American Gods. It takes up more room than the book alone but I can store more items inside if need be.

I didn't see much else of note during the rest of the time I spent browsing at Hastings. I left and returned home on the bus. I read a few of the stories in my new book and then played Fallout 3, which I need to write about soon.

So that was the day that didn't go as planned but ended well.
